The following Practice Direction is published by direction of the Chief Justice, the Honourable Mr Justice Underwood AO.
This Practice Direction replaces 11/2000.
Following the successful trial of setting aside nominated days to hear pleas of guilty, the Chief Justice and the Judges of the Supreme Court have determined that unless otherwise advised by a Judge:
The second and fourth Wednesday of every criminal sittings in Hobart, Burnie and Launceston will be set aside to hear pleas of guilty. Any pending trial will be interrupted for this purpose.
In addition, the present practice of hearing pleas of guilty at the beginning of the sittings in Launceston and Burnie will continue.
Crown counsel and defence counsel may organise between themselves convenient times throughout a plea day in order to minimise expense and inconvenience by keeping counsel waiting for their matter to be called on.
