Part 13 of the Justice and Related Legislation (Further Miscellaneous Amendments) Act 2006 No. 43 of 2006 was proclaimed in the Government Gazette on 28 June 2007 and became effective on and from 1 July 2007.
The Act amended section 3 of the Magistrates Court (Civil Division) Act 1992 by increasing the “prescribed amount” to $50,000. The effect of the amendment is that matters of a monetary nature up to an amount of $50,000 can now be filed in the Magistrates Court (Civil Division). Those matters in excess of $50,000 (previously $20,000) continue to be filed in the Supreme Court.
