Supreme Court of Tasmania

Law Libraries

The Andrew Inglis Clark Law Library commenced its operations in 2002 and is the central service point for an integrated library service for:

  • The Law Society of Tasmania
  • The Department of Justice;
  • The Supreme Court; and
  • The Magistrates Court.

There are three libraries open to the public as well as the participating organisations. They are:

  • The Andrew Inglis Clark Law Library;
  • The Launceston Law Library; and
  • The North West Law Library (Burnie).

The Department of Justice retains a working collection for the Solicitor General and the DPP.  The Courts also have their own collections for use by Judges, Magistrates and court staff. These collections are not open to the public but arrangements can be made for material in these libraries to be borrowed and used in the Andrew Inglis Clark Law Library.

The Integrated Library Service is administered according to a partnership agreement between the Crown and the Law Society of Tasmania. Day-to-day management is provided by the Department of Justice through the Library Manager. Budget and policies of the integrated libraries are determined by the Management Committee.

The Management Committee is made up of:

  • the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court or his nominee;
  • the Chief Magistrate or his nominee;
  • the Secretary of the Department or his nominee;
  • the President of the Law Society or his nominee;
  • a member of the Law Society from either northern Tasmania or north-western Tasmania
  • the Library Manager.
