Supreme Court of Tasmania

Self Represented Litigants

If you want to bring a civil action in the Supreme Court but you:

  • cannot afford the services of a lawyer;
  • cannot find a lawyer willing to take on your case; or
  • deliberately choose not to be represented,

then you can appear in court as a self represented litigant.

Registry staff can assist you with information on court processes and procedures but they cannot give you legal advice.

The Legal Advice link on the left of this page provides a list of organisations that are available to help people with legal problems. In addition self represented litigants can make an appointment with a lawyer at the Legal Aid Commission, who will be able to provide some assistance with their cases. Contact details can be found on the Commission's web site.

The Civil Litigants page will provide you with information on court processes, court etiquette and links to Court Practice Directions and appropriate legislation.
