Citing Tasmanian Cases

Unreported Judgments

The Tasmanian Supreme Court has adopted the recommendations of the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration on the production and publicatiobn of judgments in a standardised format.

From 1999 the citation for Tasmanian Unreported Judgments has been in the form of:

(The parties) [year of the decision] (Court abbreviation) (judgment sequential number)

for example: Hibble v Cannon [2001] TASSC 1

Reported Judgments

Reported Tasmanian cases appear in the following series:

• Nicholls and Stops' Reports (N & S), 1897-1904 (2 vols)
• Tasmanian Law Reports (Tas LR) 1904-1940
• Tasmanian State Reports (Tas SR) 1941-1978
• Tasmanian Reports (Tas R) 1979-1991
• Tasmanian Reports (Tas R) 1992 to the present.
  
  Note that the present series uses consecutive volume numbers as in the following example:
           Smith v Visser (2001) 10 Tas R 115
  and that the 1979-1991 volumes do not have volume numbers and are cited as follows:
            Levy v Strickland [1983] Tas R 9
  

Handing up authorities in court

The judges of the Supreme Court will accept printouts of judgments from AustLII and commercial databases being handed up in court providing they follow medium neutral citation rules and each paragraph is numbered.
