TASMANIA v SHAUN ANDREW BLAKE 26 OCTOBER 2009
COMMENTS ON PASSING SENTENCE CRAWFORD CJ
Shaun Andrew Blake pleaded guilty to armed robbery. On 18 August last he went to a Newnham supermarket at about 8pm and held up the manageress with a knife, while holding his arm across his face. He obtained $560 in cash and ran from the store. Information from members of the public resulted in his detection and his arrest three days later.
When interviewed, he denied involvement and claimed to have an alibi. However, his plea of guilty was indicated soon after.
Not surprisingly, the crime has psychologically affected his victim in ways she described to the Court.
He is 30 years old. He has a substantial record for offending, which includes many offences of dishonesty, a common assault in 2006 and particularly relevant, an armed robbery in 1998 and another in 2004. He has had many sentences of imprisonment. Typically, abuse of drugs has blighted his life and has been the principal reason for his offending behaviour. He is currently serving a sentence for perverting justice. He has spent three days in custody for this armed robbery.
